I've own both and they are quite equivalent but different. If the M7 is agile, light and handy, the Coast HP7 would be heavy, durable and also chunkier. They are both good. However, the fittings and controls seems more fragile compared with the HP7. Although the M7 spec has the output as 200 lumens and the HP7's output as 251 lumens, they are quite identical. I verified this with a photography light meter and they both register the same on the high beam. To the naked eye, the M7's light appears brighter than the HP7 because it is white, and the HP7 has a warmer glow, but the output is the same. There is a lot more control on the M7 as far as different lightings are concerned. There is blinking, beaming, pauses, strobes and all the nine yards, but I just don't think it is needed. The more functions incorporated, the more indirect the control gets and it is not intuitive to use. Apart from the high and the low beam, the rest of the lighting controls are unnecessary. I gave low marks to the controlling switch because it is supposed to work in sequence, but in reality it often misses the sequence and you just have to keep trying before you get it right. To me, that is kind of frustrating because when you need the flashlight you need it right away. Imagine when you want the light to shine up while walking in the dark, and yet it blinks, and strobes, and put out SOS signals etc.....before getting to the lighting you want. It is a very good flashlight, but the user interface falls short. Seriously who needs the SOS, strobes and the blinking functions......etc...
