I purchased this footprint (or ground tarp) for my drifter 3 a couple months ago. The first time I tested it, it was raining for 15 hours straight and we had pitched our tent on a rockface (a good test for the durability) and when I got home, I was feeling two things... Yes, this footprint is of great quality and made from nice, lightweight materials but, its not worth the extra 40 bucks. And heres why... First of all, I love mountain hardwear. It's an exceptional outdoor brand. Although, I feel like this ground cloth is gimic. It is just a square piece of lightweight, coated nylon that has gromits attached to it. I know that's what a footprint is supposed to be but if you think this thing is a great value, think again. If I were to use the footprint for the "pitchlight" method (where you only use the fly and the footprint, leaving the tent body at home), then yes, it's totally worth it. If I was hiking the Appalachian trail (or similar thru-hikes) during the summer months and wanted a lightweight and durable footprint, then yes, it's 100% worth it... But, if your using this tent for weekend adventures and the occassional 2-5 night backpacking trip, I would NOT reccommend it. The mountain hardwear footprint itself weighs 366 grams, 12.9 oz, or 0.8 lbs, dimensions folded as small as it will go: 9.5" x 5.5" x 1.5". I went to wal-mart yesterday and bought a 8'x10' utility tarp ($7.50). Today I pitched my tent on it (including the fly with vestibules) and drew a line around the edge of my tent on the tarp with a sharpie. I cut on the inside of the lines with a utility knife and essentailly created my own ground sheet that not only protects my tent bottom, but also covers the area under my vestibules (allowing for me to use the vestibules for dry storage on the wet ground/snowpack). I then hammered a few brass gromits on the edges of the tarp (so I can stake it to the ground). This unit weighs in at 541 grams, 19.05 oz, or 1.192 lbs, dimensions folded as small as it will go: 12" x 9" x 1.5". Now, I am not an ultralight backpacker, so I can muscle in the extra size & weight. But really? Is a tarp thats 6 times more expense and weighs 6.15 oz lighter, worth it to you? You be the judge. The reason I am still giving it 4 stars is because of the great quality of the materials and its exactly what they claim it to be. Unfortunatly, I am the one who hit the "checkout" button, so my bad. I will still be using the footprint on summer trips to dry places. But for all my quick, overnight backpacking trips in the pouring rain (because thats when my schedual allows me to go) I will take my $7.50 wal-mart tarp. Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Mountain Hardwear Drifter 3 Footprint One Size" are high quality item.
