I've been using Hutchinson Python Air Lights on a mountain bike that I ride half the time in the city and half the time off road, but the Pythons wore out and so I bought this tire as a substitute. It is light and fairly smooth rolling on pavement, though you do get the tire noise that sounds like an engine at high speeds. On the dirt I was surprised that, despite the much more aggressive tread, it was not as good on loose surfaces as the Pythons. I think the Pythons were a bit more supple and that the profusion of knobs on the Small Block, while impressive looking, might be less useful on looser surfaces. The flip side is that I feel more comfortable turning at high speeds; even at a sharp angle I know there are going to be treads digging into the dirt.

I could imagine taking the Small Block onto some fairly technical terrain yet it is not so bad for pavement, and I'm not sure there are many other tires out there around 500g about which you could say this.
